Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is facing another legal battle as he has been indicted for money laundering and criminal association in connection with undeclared diamonds from Saudi Arabia. This marks the second formal accusation against the far-right leader, with more potentially on the horizon.
Sources confirmed the indictment by Federal Police, following another accusation in May for allegedly falsifying his COVID-19 vaccination certificate. Brazil’s Supreme Court is yet to receive the police report, and the country’s prosecutor-general will decide whether to file charges and force Bolsonaro to stand trial.
The former president and his lawyers have denied any wrongdoing in both cases. Bolsonaro was previously accused of attempting to sneak in diamond jewelry reportedly worth $3 million and selling two luxury watches, all gifts that should have been declared upon entry into Brazil.
The indictment has increased the legal threats against Bolsonaro, sparking mixed reactions from his supporters and opponents. His eldest son, Flávio Bolsonaro, called the persecution “blatant and shameless,” while his critics have cheered the progress of the investigations and called for his arrest.
Despite the legal challenges, Bolsonaro retains a strong political base. However, with upcoming mayoral elections, the Supreme Court may proceed cautiously to avoid inciting his supporters. The former president’s troubles may continue to grow, with more legal issues likely to arise in the coming months.
