Lifezone Metals Makes Breakthrough in Sustainable Nickel Processing

Lifezone Metals, a mining company focused on the Kabanga nickel project in Tanzania, has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable metal production. The company announced that its proprietary processing technology, Hydromet, has demonstrated nickel recoveries of over 98.5%, far surpassing conventional methods.

CEO Chris Showalter expressed pride in this achievement, citing the company’s commitment to innovation. Chief Technology Officer Mike Adams also praised the effectiveness of their hydrometallurgical techniques and emphasized the positive impact this breakthrough will have on the Kabanga nickel project.

The Kabanga project is known for being one of the largest and highest-grade undeveloped nickel sulphide resources globally. Past owners, Glencore and Barrick, invested over $293 million in exploration and appraisal drilling, leading to Lifezone’s acquisition of the project in 2021 with BHP’s support.

With an estimated 881,000 tonnes of nickel metal in measured and indicated resources, the Kabanga deposit holds significant value for the mining industry. Development plans include the construction of a Hydromet refinery in Tanzania, with production expected to begin in two phases.

Despite this positive news, shares of Lifezone Metals dipped by 7.0% in New York, reflecting market fluctuations. Nevertheless, the company remains optimistic about the future of the Kabanga nickel project and the potential for sustainable metal production in the region. The completion of a definitive feasibility study is anticipated in the coming quarter.
