Westinghouse Completes First Production of ADOPT Fuel Pellets

On October 10, 2023, Westinghouse Electric Company announced a significant milestone in nuclear fuel technology with the completion of its first pressing of Low Enriched Uranium Plus (LEU+) ADOPT™ fuel pellets. This advancement is set to enhance the safety and reliability of pressurized water reactors (PWRs) while improving fuel cycle economics through extended operating cycles.

The ADOPT fuel pellets, which contain uranium enriched between 5% and 19.75%, exceed the traditional enrichment threshold for commercial reactors. This allows for increased uranium density, contributing to better overall efficiency in the operation of nuclear plants.

Regulatory Approvals and Future Developments

Westinghouse has received regulatory approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to utilize ADOPT fuel pellets in U.S. PWRs. This approval follows successful demonstrations to both the NRC and the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS). The ADOPT fuel is also a key component of Westinghouse’s EnCore® Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) Program, which strives to enhance the accident tolerance of conventional uranium dioxide fuel pellets.

Looking ahead, Westinghouse is contracted to deliver reload quantities of ADOPT fuel for three units starting in 2025, indicating a strong commitment to long-term supply and overall integration into existing and future nuclear power plants. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with global investments in nuclear power as a reliable and clean energy source, as emphasized by the recent U.S. pledge at COP28 to triple nuclear capacity globally.

The successful production of ADOPT fuel not only represents a transition from development to commercial production but also demonstrates Westinghouse’s commitment to advancing nuclear technology. With governmental support underscored by funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, the development of ADOPT fuel is poised to contribute to the enhanced performance, safety, and economic viability of nuclear energy in the years to come.
