Westinghouse Electric Company Produces Advanced Nuclear Fuel Pellets

As of October 2023, Westinghouse Electric Company has announced the production of its first batch of nuclear fuel pellets featuring higher enrichment levels than those currently utilized in commercial reactors. The innovative Low Enriched Uranium Plus Advanced Doped Pellet Technology (LEU+ ADOPT) offers enhanced performance and safety features for nuclear power plants.

These new fuel pellets are engineered to contain up to 8% uranium-235 by weight, significantly surpassing existing enrichment levels in the nuclear industry. The initial pressing was successfully completed at Westinghouse’s Springfields Fuel Manufacturing Facility located in the United Kingdom.

Testing and Future Implications

The newly produced fuel pellets are slated for irradiation testing in Southern Nuclear’s Vogtle-2 pressurized water reactor. This testing phase aims to evaluate the performance, efficiency, and safety improvements offered by the advanced fuel technology.

In addition to the fuel pellets, Westinghouse has implemented additive manufacturing (AM) to create bottom nozzles that enhance debris capture and fuel longevity. Early next year, four Lead Test Assemblies featuring these nozzles will be delivered to Alabama Power’s Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, signifying a commitment to performance and safety that aims to increase debris resistance from 65% to 96% within fuel assemblies.

This milestone in the uranium industry could lead to the introduction of advanced reactors that utilize high-assay low-enriched uranium fuels, thereby revolutionizing the landscape of future nuclear power operations in terms of efficiency and safety.

As the market evolves with these advanced technologies, it is anticipated that similar innovations will drive continuous improvement in nuclear fuel technology, benefiting the overall sustainability and reliability of nuclear energy.
