Gremlins baseball sweeps Copper Kings in doubleheader | News, Sports, Jobs

The Houghton Gremlins came out swinging in a doubleheader against the Calumet Copper Kings at their home field, securing victories with scores of 12-3 and 14-3. The second game ended in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule after the Gremlins established a significant lead.

Houghton’s coach Kevin Bostwick praised his team’s improved hitting performance, noting that they had worked hard to turn things around after struggling at the plate in previous games. In the first game, pitcher Bryce Pugh delivered a stellar performance, allowing just one earned run over six innings while striking out eight batters.

Despite an early lead by the Copper Kings in the opener, the Gremlins rallied back with a strong offensive showing, taking advantage of walks and errors to secure the 12-3 win. In the second game, Houghton continued their offensive onslaught, scoring 10 runs off Calumet’s starter Trent Habnen in just two innings.

Leading the charge for the Gremlins was Joel Durocher, who went three for three at the plate and drove in four runs. While Calumet attempted to stage a comeback in the second game, their efforts fell short as Houghton sealed the 14-3 victory.

Looking ahead, the Gremlins will face off against Marquette in varsity and JV matchups, while the Copper Kings will take on Gladstone before traveling for a doubleheader against the Jeffers Jets. Despite the losses, Calumet’s coach David Yeo remains optimistic, noting that the team is still finding their footing early in the season.
