Endangered listing of rare lizard could potentially impact oil and gas drilling in Permian Basin | OUT WEST ROUNDUP | News

In a crucial decision that could have significant implications for energy development in southeastern New Mexico and West Texas, federal wildlife officials have declared the dunes sagebrush lizard an endangered species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service cited future energy development, sand mining, and climate change as the biggest threats to the survival of this rare lizard, which is already “functionally extinct” across almost half of its range.

This decision, which comes after two decades of legal battles between conservationists and the oil and gas industry, has environmentalists cheering and industry leaders expressing disappointment. The Permian Basin Petroleum Association and the New Mexico Oil & Gas Association have condemned the move, stating that it could jeopardize future production of fossil fuels in the region.

The dunes sagebrush lizard, with its 2.5-inch-long spiny body, is a unique species found only in the Permian Basin. Its habitat has been fragmented, making it difficult for the lizards to find mates beyond their immediate surroundings. Scientists warn that this endangered status is a “lifeline for survival” for a species that has been threatened by industrial activities.

Meanwhile, in New Mexico, health officials are warning residents about the dangers of extreme heat as temperatures soar in eastern and southern parts of the state. With record high temperatures already being recorded, authorities are urging people to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, which can range from skin rashes to exhaustion. Vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, are especially at risk during this heatwave.
