Nigerian National Petroleum Co. Ltd. (NNPC) has made significant strides in increasing oil production in the country, with the restart of production at the Awoba field and the commencement of production at the Madu field.
The Awoba field, which was previously shut down in February 2024, has now resumed production and is expected to reach a plateau of 12,000 barrels per day within the next 30 days. This move is set to significantly boost Nigeria’s gas supply, with the field located in the mangrove swamp south of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
On the other hand, the Madu field, operated by NNPC in partnership with First Exploration and Petroleum Development Company Limited (First E&P), has also begun oil production. Expected to produce an average of 20,000 barrels per day, the field offshore Bayelsa State will utilize the Abigail-Joseph Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) Unit for processing.
NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mele Kyari, hailed the commencement of production at the Madu field as a crucial milestone towards meeting the production targets necessary for revenue growth and economic development in Nigeria. He also highlighted the collaborative efforts of stakeholders in achieving this production milestone.
With a string of successful production ventures from its JV portfolio, including the restart of production at OML 29 and OML 18 in late 2023, NNPC continues to contribute significantly to the nation’s overall oil production. The addition of 20,000 barrels per day from the Madu field underscores the commitment of stakeholders towards economic development in Nigeria.
