Discover Washington’s Nuclear Waste at the International Uranium Film Festival.

The International Uranium Film Festival (IUFF) is shedding light on nuclear issues worldwide, with a special focus on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in the U.S. Located just 180 miles northwest of Seattle, Hanford is the most toxic and radioactive site in the Western Hemisphere, presenting an overwhelming challenge for cleanup efforts.

The festival kicked off in Window Rock, Arizona, on March 7, and is now making its way to Seattle at the Northwest Film Forum. One of the featured films, “Richland,” explores the lasting legacy of Hanford and the nearby town of Richland, which was built in 1943 to support the top-secret Manhattan Project.

Director Irene Lusztig delves into the complex feelings and ideas of Richland residents, who have a deep connection to the town’s contributions to nuclear weapons but also grapple with the health and environmental consequences. The film also examines the controversial use of a mushroom cloud as the high school’s logo, highlighting the town’s conflicted past and present.

Britany Kee’ ya aa. Eichman-Lindley, staff attorney for Hanford Challenge, emphasized the importance of addressing Hanford’s cleanup and its impact on the environment and communities downstream. She urged Seattle residents to care about Hanford, as the site’s contamination affects the entire region and poses serious risks to public health.

As the festival continues, discussions and screenings like “Richland” aim to raise awareness about the ongoing challenges of nuclear waste cleanup and the need for transparency and accountability in addressing these issues. Residents are encouraged to attend and learn more about the complex history and legacy of Hanford and Richland.
