Essex, Mass.—The esteemed Alfred “Fred” W. DeScenza, a prominent figure in the diamond industry and beloved member of the community, passed away at the age of 95 on April 1, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and generosity.
Born to Alfred F. DeScenza and Bertha DeScenza in June 1928, DeScenza’s passion for gemology led him to graduate from the Gemological Institute of America as a gemologist before joining the family business, DeScenza Diamonds in Boston, Massachusetts.
Throughout his life, DeScenza was deeply involved in various organizations within the industry, including serving as chairman of the board, president, treasurer, and diamond buyer for DeScenza Diamonds. His dedication and expertise earned him a lifetime membership with GIA and membership in prestigious associations like the Diamond Dealers Club of New York and the American Gem Trade Association.
In addition to his contributions to the diamond world, DeScenza was also a devoted philanthropist and community leader. He served on the board of directors for various organizations, including the Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum, U.S. Trust, and Farmsteads of New England, a nonprofit founded by his daughter, Deborah, to support individuals with developmental disabilities.
DeScenza’s commitment to his family, community, and passions in life, such as skiing, gardening, and boat building, endeared him to all who knew him. His daughter Deborah fondly recalled her father as the “wind beneath her wings,” praising his unwavering support throughout her endeavors.
A funeral mass was held in his honor, and in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Farmsteads of New England, a cause close to DeScenza’s heart. His memory will forever live on through his loving wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who continue to cherish his legacy of loyalty, integrity, and kindness.
