Can Copper Pillowcases Improve Skin Health?

In a recent column by Valerie Monroe, the question arises about the use of copper-infused pillowcases and their impact on the skin microbiome. While copper is known for its antibacterial properties, there is concern about whether it could also affect beneficial bacteria on the skin.

Dermatologist Dr. Heidi Waldorf explains that copper has been used as an antibacterial agent for centuries and is effective against pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Contrary to popular belief, copper does not impact the normal skin microbiome, only targeting harmful bacteria.

For acne-prone individuals, especially teens who may not clean their faces well, using pillowcases with copper fibers can be beneficial. Waldorf notes that one of her patients saw significant improvement in their acne by simply using a copper-infused pillowcase.

While a small study on copper-infused pillowcases for wrinkle reduction showed some promising results, Waldorf recommends silk pillowcases for preventing wrinkles instead. The theory behind copper for wrinkle reduction involves the absorption of copper through the skin, which can improve skin proteins and the extracellular matrix.

Overall, the use of copper-infused pillowcases can be helpful for maintaining healthy skin, especially for those prone to acne. With further research and expert advice, individuals can make informed decisions about their skincare routine.
