Government Warns That Metal Scavengers Pose Security Threat to Delta

The Delta State Government has taken a firm stance against metal scavenging activities, commonly known as ‘Iron Condemn’, by ordering the arrest and prosecution of culprits involved in such illegal activities. The ban on metal scavengers has been reiterated in all 25 Local Government Areas of the State, with the government emphasizing the need to crack down on these activities to protect the security and well-being of residents.

According to Latimore Oghesenevbe, chief executive officer of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, the ban on metal scavengers is a crucial step in maintaining peace and security in the State. The government has received reports of alleged persisting activities of metal scavengers in some areas, posing a threat to the privacy and safety of residents.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Jamani Ejiro, confirmed that the Ministry has never issued permits or branded uniforms to Iron Condemn scavengers, refuting any claims of legitimacy in their operations. In response to these reports, the government has urged the public to report any metal scavenger in their area to the authorities for immediate arrest and prosecution.

The Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing peace and security in the State by cracking down on illegal activities such as metal scavenging. The government has directed law enforcement agents and the state taskforce on environment to intensify compliance efforts and ensure that offenders are brought to justice.

The penalty for engaging in iron condemn activities includes fines, imprisonment, or both, as the government seeks to eliminate the threat posed by metal scavengers to properties and residents. The ban on metal scavengers in Delta State remains in full force, with no authorized or licensed operators recognized by the government.
