Maetherea Studio Creates Iron Reef Installation Emerged from River Yare Reedbeds in Norfolk

Maetherea Studio, a landscape architecture practice, has recently unveiled their latest installation named Iron Reef in Norfolk, which merges with the reedbeds of the River Yare. The unique structure is constructed using rusty iron rebars that rise in a curved formation, resembling the surrounding reeds.

Designed as an “amphibious” installation, Iron Reef is meant to withstand the changing tides at the site, being cyclically submerged during winter and emerging as a landmark between the reeds. The slim vertical bars of weathered metal are strategically placed to mimic the local landscape and create a striking visual impact.

The installation also features a curving boardwalk made of red resin-bound granite, providing visitors with a viewpoint over the river. Maetherea Studio emphasized the interactive nature of the structure, inviting people to observe the landscape through the season’s changes and interact with the environment.

To ensure minimal disruption to the site, the installation was prefabricated into six separate modules before being assembled on-site. Additionally, the surrounding area has been planted with a coastal meadow flower mixture to enhance biodiversity.

With a zero-energy lighting system that illuminates the structure overnight, Iron Reef is not only a visually stunning artwork but also a sustainable and nature-informed installation. Maetherea Studio’s innovative design approach highlights the industrial and nautical traditions of the Norfolk landscape, adding a unique touch to the natural surroundings.
