Nyrstar Addresses Critical Minerals at International Summit in Washington, D.C.

Nyrstar’s Global Head of Strategic Initiatives, Greg Belland, made waves at the recent Select USA Summit in Washington D.C. as a guest speaker on a panel about the critical minerals industry. The Summit, attended by government leaders, business visionaries, and investors from over 75 countries, focused on the importance of critical minerals in various industries including green energy, high tech, and national security.

During his speech, Belland highlighted Nyrstar’s role as an international producer of critical minerals and metals, emphasizing the company’s ability to supply approximately 80% of the annual domestic U.S. needs of germanium and gallium. These materials, crucial for the green energy transition, are currently heavily dominated by China. Tennessee, where Nyrstar operates, is the only place in the U.S. where gallium and germanium can be extracted and processed at such high levels.

The Clarksville smelter, owned by Nyrstar, is the sole primary zinc producer in the United States. Operating for over 45 years, the smelter produces a variety of products including special high grade zinc, zinc alloys, sulphuric acid, germanium concentrate, and more using advanced smelting technology.

The Select USA Summit serves as a platform for participants to gain valuable insights into policy and investment trends, forge connections, and develop business relationships. As a key player in the critical minerals industry, Nyrstar’s presence at the Summit highlights the company’s commitment to supplying essential materials for the U.S. market and promoting foreign direct investment in the country.
