City Hall was filled with a sense of pride and admiration as the annual FDNY Medal ceremony took place on Wednesday June 5. Thousands of firefighters and their families gathered on Park Row to honor the brave men and women who serve in the fire department, with many firemen in their dress uniforms making a striking sight.
Among this year’s Manhattan-based awardees was Brendan Gaffney of Ladder Company 36, who received the prestigious Hugh Bonner and Honor Legion medals. Gaffney’s heroic actions at an Inwood apartment complex fire on February 5, 2023, where he rescued a young child and a pregnant woman, earned him this well-deserved recognition.
The fire at 165 Sherman Avenue posed a significant challenge to Gaffney and his team as they faced intense heat and zero visibility in the building. The source of the fire, an exploding e-bike lithium-ion battery, added to the danger they encountered. Despite the obstacles, Gaffney’s unwavering courage and quick thinking enabled him to rescue the trapped victims and bring them to safety.
His selfless actions, along with the efforts of his fellow firefighters, showcased the bravery and dedication that embody the spirit of the FDNY. Gaffney’s heroism serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that firefighters make every day to protect their communities.
As the ceremony came to a close, the applause and cheers that filled City Hall were a testament to the profound impact that Gaffney and his fellow firefighters have on the city. Their commitment to service and bravery in the face of danger is truly commendable and worthy of celebration.
