Controversy over water rights on the Green River threatens to halt project

The state engineer’s decision to approve water rights for lithium drilling on the Green River is now under scrutiny as she reconsiders the approval. This decision came after an Australian company proposed a new method that uses virtually no water for lithium extraction, a crucial element for rechargeable batteries in various electronic devices and electric vehicles.

The Biden administration views lithium as essential for the nation’s transition to cleaner, renewable energy. However, concerns have been raised by a group of farmers, residents, and environmentalists regarding the potential risks of using water from the drought-affected Colorado River system for this project.

Deputy State Engineer Michael Drake stated that recent requests for reconsideration highlighted issues that warranted additional review, prompting the state engineer to revisit her initial approval. The approval was granted to Blackstone Minerals to extract lithium using groundwater from a deep aquifer, but with the growing concerns, the decision is now being reevaluated.

Environmental groups and local residents fear the impact on groundwater, the Green River, and potential environmental degradation. Anson Resources, the company behind the project, emphasized their commitment to protecting the area’s resources but faces scrutiny over the extraction method and water usage.

The ongoing debate underscores the complexities of balancing resource extraction for economic growth with environmental preservation and public welfare. The outcome of the reconsideration process will have significant implications for the region’s water resources and environmental sustainability.
