American Battery Technology Company (ABAT) has made a significant breakthrough in the manufacture of lithium hydroxide using its internally-developed processing technologies from a U.S resource. The demonstration-scale quantities of lithium hydroxide produced will be utilized by strategic partners for qualification processes in negotiation of long-term commercial-scale offtake agreements. This development marks a crucial milestone in diminishing reliance on foreign entities for lithium supply and supports the build-out of a North American Critical Battery Minerals Supply Chain.
The successful operation of the demonstration facility paves the way for the acceleration of construction and operation of a 30,000 MT LiOH/year commercial-scale domestic refinery supported by the U.S Department of Energy grant. Located at the Tonopah Flats Lithium Project in Nevada, one of the largest known lithium deposits in the country, this refinery signifies a significant step towards establishing a sustainable and independent source of lithium production within the United States.
CEO Ryan Melsert expressed excitement over the achievement, emphasizing the importance of developing technologies for domestic lithium manufacturing. The demonstration-scale facility’s ability to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide from unconventional claystone resources represents a strategic advantage in supporting the construction of high energy density cathode active material manufacturing facilities in North America.
American Battery Technology Company’s innovative approach to lithium production and battery recycling aligns with the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions in the electric vehicle and stationary storage industries. By establishing a circular supply chain for battery metals, ABAT is at the forefront of driving a global transition towards electrification and sustainable energy.
