Ascend Performance Materials has announced that its electrolyte additive for lithium-ion batteries, Trinohex Ultra, has received REACH approval in Korea. This approval allows for the import of up to 1,000 metric tons annually, expanding the availability of this innovative material in the region.
Trinohex Ultra, a high-purity 1,3,6-hexanetricarbonitrile, is designed to enhance the life cycle and safety of high-voltage lithium-ion batteries, particularly those used in electric vehicles. By forming a protective film around the cathode, this additive prevents metal ion dissolution and electrolyte decomposition, resulting in batteries that are safer and longer-lasting.
Dave McNeece, the business director for Ascend’s sustainable specialties division, emphasized the challenges of achieving reliable performance at high voltage in batteries. Trinohex Ultra addresses this issue by providing higher overall voltage stability, allowing manufacturers to improve their cell performance and increase cycle life.
Third-party testing has demonstrated the superior cathode protection offered by Trinohex Ultra, showing a 30% reduction in harmful gas generation and improved performance, especially under extreme conditions. With Korea being a significant producer of EV batteries, the expanded import volumes will support manufacturers as they develop innovative batteries without performance dips.
Ascend Performance Materials continues to pursue new and expanded chemical inventory registrations globally, following previous approvals in Europe and China. The company is dedicated to providing high-performance materials that contribute to a better tomorrow through innovation.
