Who Holds the Power Over Argentina’s Lithium Resources?

Argentina’s lithium industry, encompassing vast salt flats, is at the forefront of the global renewable energy revolution. With an abundance of reserves coveted by manufacturers worldwide, the country holds immense potential for economic growth and foreign currency acquisition.

However, the rapid expansion of lithium mining in Argentina has raised concerns among experts. The large-scale extraction of this coveted metal, essential for batteries used in electric vehicles and electronic devices, may be following damaging historic patterns seen in the extraction of other minerals.

A recent survey conducted as part of the Pathways to Net Zero Project revealed that multinational mining companies are vying for control over millions of hectares of salt flats in the country. Litica, a division of oil giant Pluspetrol, leads the pack with claims to over 320,000 hectares, followed by Arcadium Lithium, a merger between Livent and Allkem, with at least 232,637 hectares.

While the economic benefits of lithium mining are clear, Indigenous communities in areas like Salinas Grandes have been embroiled in legal battles to protect their lands and water sources. Opponents of mining activities cite potential environmental impacts, water stress, and threats to their traditional economic activities.

As the lithium industry continues to grow in Argentina, the delicate balance between economic progress and environmental conservation remains a pressing concern. With the country’s unique ecosystems at stake, the future of lithium mining in Argentina hangs in the balance, surrounded by a complex web of social, economic, and environmental challenges.
