Colorado Company to Increase Uranium Production near Kaycee, Wyoming

Energy Fuels Inc. is gearing up for a significant expansion at its Nichols Ranch uranium mine located near Kaycee, Wyoming, with plans to begin production by 2025. The company aims to produce up to 2 million pounds of uranium per year, citing the Wyoming mine as a key contributor to this production goal.

CEO Mark Chalmers of Energy Fuels recently revealed the company’s strategy to build a combined uranium and rare earths mineral company, with a focus on exploring acquisition opportunities. Chalmers expressed confidence in the global competitiveness of the rare earths side of the business, highlighting the growing demand for these minerals in various industries including electric vehicles, wind turbines, and military technology.

The surge in demand for rare earth minerals has been driven by the green transition and advanced technological developments, prompting companies like Energy Fuels to capitalize on this market opportunity. Additionally, Energy Fuels has benefitted from the federal government’s initiative to establish a strategic reserve of uranium, with other mining interests in Wyoming also contributing to this reserve.

In the 2024 first quarter, Energy Fuels reported a profit of $3.6 million on revenue of $25.4 million, excluding the Nichols Ranch mine. The company boasts several uranium projects in different stages of development across the Powder River Basin, with the potential to produce up to 5 million pounds annually.

With record uranium spot prices reaching a multi-decade high, Energy Fuels is strategically positioned to leverage the booming uranium and rare earths markets. The company’s ambitious expansion plans and robust projects underscore its commitment to playing a pivotal role in the growing energy and technology sectors.
