Historic Gold-Rush Era Site Taken Over by B.C. First Nation, Set to Indigenize

The Historic Hat Creek Ranch, a popular heritage site north of Cache Creek, has opened its doors under new management this year. The Bonaparte First Nation has taken over the operations through the St’uxwtews Pesuten Heritage Society after the dissolution of the Friends of Historic Hat Creek Ranch Society.

Chief Kukpi7 Frank Antoine expressed excitement about managing and developing the historic site over the next six years. Plans include adding new infrastructure such as a permanent powwow arbour, a new bridge to the site, a rodeo ground, and even a firehall to ensure the protection of the site. These additions aim to attract more visitors and host a variety of events at the ranch.

Antoine highlighted the importance of preserving the existing exhibits on the Cariboo Gold Rush while Indigenizing the site to showcase the culture and history of the Bonaparte First Nation. The ranch’s rich history dates back to the Cariboo Gold Rush in the 1860s, with several historic buildings and the original sections of the Cariboo Wagon Road still intact.

The Bonaparte First Nation plans to involve the broader community in the development of the site by inviting non-Indigenous members to join the St’uxwtews Pesuten Heritage Society board. This inclusive approach aims to create a welcoming and educational environment for all visitors.

For Chief Antoine, this new chapter in the management of Hat Creek Ranch represents a long-awaited opportunity to share the history and culture of his people. As plans unfold for future development at the site, he encourages the public to visit this summer and witness the ongoing transformation of this historic treasure.
