Perham High School and Principal Ehren Zimmerman have been awarded the prestigious Gold Star of Innovation by the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals for their outstanding work in the Diploma Plus One Program. This program aims to provide students with additional certifications, college credits, leadership experiences, and more alongside their high school diploma.
Zimmerman expressed his excitement about receiving the Gold Star of Innovation award, highlighting the school’s commitment to implementing innovative educational programs that set an example for other schools to follow. The Diploma Plus One Program was developed with the idea of giving students tangible skills and experiences that will benefit them beyond high school.
The program focuses on practical learning opportunities and obtaining certifications in various career fields of interest to the students. The ultimate goal is for students to graduate with Diploma Plus Certifications, which include work-based learning experiences, internships, and professional certifications.
Recipients of the Gold Star of Innovation award receive $250 to be used at the principal’s discretion and will be recognized at the MASSP Summer Conference. Zimmerman emphasized that the award reflects the collective effort of the school staff in making meaningful changes to support the students effectively.
The recognition is not just a reflection of Zimmerman’s leadership but of the entire staff’s willingness to adapt and improve to best serve the students. The Certification piece of the program is seen as a significant and valuable initiative that will benefit students for years to come.
