Local News: Georgetown PD Upgrades Supported by Whittier Tech Students

Metal fabrication students at Whittier Tech have recently undertaken a project to upgrade prisoner cells at the Georgetown police station, enhancing safety and security for inmates. Under the guidance of welding instructor Steve Palmer, seventeen students worked on improving the sheet metal and brackets inside the cells after Police Chief David Sedgwick expressed his concerns about the existing conditions.

The collaboration between Whittier Tech and the Georgetown Police Department proved to be a success, with Superintendent Maureen Lynch praising the students for gaining valuable on-site experience while enhancing safety features for the community. The project involved an initial site visit, production of mock-ups, test fittings, revisions, and a final installation of new sheet metal and brackets.

Chief Sedgwick commended the students for their efforts, noting that they completed the job with high quality and within the specified timeframe. This initiative further strengthens the relationship between Whittier Tech and the Georgetown Police Department, following a past collaboration where the school’s culinary arts program provided refreshments for Sedgwick’s swearing-in ceremony.

Additionally, the metal fabrication program at Whittier Tech is currently working on a community service project for the Georgetown Fire Department, showcasing the students’ dedication to serving their local first responders. With projects like these, the school continues to support and enhance the capabilities of the police, fire, and EMS departments in Georgetown.
