India’s Push Towards Green Hydrogen: Nornickel’s Innovative Solutions at the Forefront

New Delhi [India], May 3: With India emerging as a key player in the development of hydrogen energy, innovative solutions are the need of the hour to modernize production and scale up green hydrogen applications. In a bid to address this challenge, industry experts gathered at the Hydrogen Technology Expo event in Delhi to discuss cutting-edge technologies in the hydrogen and fuel cell industries.

Among the companies showcasing their innovations was Nornickel, a leading supplier of base and precious metals. Their presentation focused on palladium-based developments that have the potential to increase the efficiency of green hydrogen production in India. Palladium, known for its unique ability to split hydrogen molecules into atoms and produce ultra-pure hydrogen, is set to play a crucial role in the country’s hydrogen energy industry.

The palladium prototypes developed by Nornickel have already shown promising results in Russia, with significant improvements in performance compared to existing commercial analogues. For example, a catalyst for an electrolyzer with 30% palladium has tripled its activity, while palladium membranes have demonstrated a fourfold increase in membrane throughput in the production of ultra-pure hydrogen.

Anna Karzhavina, Head of Commercialisation of New Products at Nornickel, emphasized the efficiency gains of palladium-based catalysts throughout the production chain, from electrolysis to fuel cell use. She also highlighted the importance of palladium membranes in purifying and producing ultra-pure hydrogen for various industries.

Nornickel is now looking to collaborate with Indian companies involved in hydrogen production and consumption to implement their palladium-based prototypes and further expand the use of green hydrogen in the country. With India aiming to produce 5 million tonnes of pure hydrogen per year by 2030, innovative solutions like Nornickel’s palladium developments could play a crucial role in achieving this ambitious target.
