Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, the action-packed game released in 2013, recently became available on GOG on July 4. However, players in Japan were surprised to discover that they couldn’t purchase the game digitally on either Steam or GOG.
The game, developed by Platinum Games and initially by Konami’s Kojima Productions, follows the story of Raiden, known for his cyborg ninja exoskeleton and high-frequency katana weapon. The fast-paced gameplay allows players to slice through enemies with precision, utilizing a bullet time mode to target weaknesses effectively.
While Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance has been released on multiple platforms worldwide, players in Japan have been limited to playing the game only on the PS3. The recent announcement of the game’s availability on GOG gave hope to Japanese players, but their excitement was short-lived as the product page was quickly removed.
Konami Digital Entertainment later confirmed that the GOG version would not be sold in Japan, maintaining region restrictions similar to the Steam version. This decision disappointed many Japanese players, who expressed their frustration on social media platforms.
For now, players in Japan who want to experience Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance must seek out a physical copy of the PS3 version. While the reasons behind the region restrictions remain unclear, fans speculate that Konami may have future plans for releasing the game on modern platforms.
The availability of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance on GOG varies by region, but for players outside of Japan, the game can now be enjoyed on the platform.
