South Africa is gearing up to make a strong presence at the upcoming Shanghai Platinum Week 2024, with a focus on the growing demand for platinum group metals (PGMs) in China. The event, scheduled from July 8 to 11, will bring together a diverse group of South African miners and industry representatives.
Minerals Council South Africa VP Paul Dunne emphasized the importance of detailed access to the Chinese market, particularly in the context of the high demand for PGM applications in the country. The event, while named Shanghai Platinum Week, will also shed light on hydrogen metals, which are becoming increasingly relevant in the industry.
The event will feature simultaneous translation, given China’s status as the world’s largest PGM consumer. As South Africa remains the largest PGM supplier, the country sees this event as a crucial opportunity to strengthen its position in the global market.
Furthermore, the event will focus on key areas like green hydrogen, semiconductor industry, and extended-range electric vehicles. Chinese investors are showing a growing interest in PGMs, not just for industrial use but also as a retirement investment. The event aims to provide valuable insights into China’s PGM market and encourage dialogue between international participants and Chinese policymakers.
With the event set to offer a platform for networking and information exchange, South Africa’s presence at Shanghai Platinum Week is seen as a strategic move to tap into the lucrative Chinese market and drive growth in the PGM industry.
